Bushcraft

Red-Deer offers both Bushcraft and Survival courses, nature observation and wild-food Gourmet courses; all are designed and tailored as necessary to appeal to a wide range of individuals, groups, families, clubs, or corporate parties across a wide range of age-groups and abilities. The emphasis, as with all our courses, is on safety first, followed by fun and progressive learning.

This year our courses will be held on the magnificent 16,500 acre Cowdray Estate located near Midhurst, West Sussex close to the borders of Hampshire & Surrey amid truly beautiful and varied countryside. Owned by the current and Fourth Viscount Cowdray - Michael Orlando Weetman Pearson - who continues with a long family commitment to the Estate, the ground comprises mature, mixed broad-leaf and coniferous woodlands, ancient hedgerows and open farmland (much of which is now organic), river-valley and open down-land. The estate covers many of the environments likely to be encountered in lowland UK and is the ideal location in which to learn more about the countryside and how to appreciate our natural wild-heritage.

We will also shortly be announcing a new course for 2009 - 'Mountain Nomad' a 5-day course based on an estate in North-West Highlands.

Regardless of if you’re completely new to the idea of bushcraft and are wondering what it’s all about, or you perhaps feel your ready to start on your own bushcraft journey of discovery; are interested in the abundance of wild foods and resources all around us, are interested to learn how to stalk wild animals including deer; how to select and set up a camping area safely or how to cook and prepare out-door meals - if so, join us to find out more about these subjects, about the great British outdoors and indeed much more about yourself too.

Meet the Red Deer Bushcraft Team:

Neil Andrews - Red-Deer Bushcraft and Outdoor Cookery Instructor

Neil Andrews is a very passionate outdoorsman who has spent time in some of the wild & remote parts of the United Kingdom, including North West Scotland, the mountains of Wales and in his home county of Dartmoor, Devon. A professional chef by trade of over 20 years standing, Neil combined his cookery and passion for the outdoors and has gained experience and an insightful knowledge of teaching outdoor skills, backwoods skills, wild food foraging &cookery, and expedition cookery techniques. Neil has worked with The Wild Food School in Cornwall, Challenger Troop in Kent (working with children with problems and learning difficulties), as well as many schools, groups and individuals throughout the UK. A keen believer in the benefits of natural fibre clothing he also designs and makes a range of dedicated clothing for outdoor professionals. In his spare time Neil spent eight years working with the Army Cadet Force, during which time he instructed regular soldiers, TA and cadets. As the unit Adventurous Training Officer he organised many trips to the welsh mountains, during these trips and many exercises he realised the profound effect spending time in the outdoors has on people of all ages.

Ian Spicer - Red Deer Bushcraft and Rifle Course Instructor

Ian is an all-round outdoorsman who, at the age of 12 was inspired by the great-outdoors whilst on a mountain-geology trip to North Wales with his school - from that time he has spent a great deal of his own time in many remote parts of the country including North Wales, the Lakes and the Scottish Highlands on walking and climbing trips and walking the down-land of Southern England. Ian is a fully qualified Shooting Instructor, he is also a very keen rifle-man and an enthusiastic deer-stalker - Ian offers client deer-stalking opportunities and runs courses on field-craft and Gralloch technique for deer-stalkers. Additionally, Ian has been a keen ornithologist from the age of 10 and is now enjoying seeing his young daughter take a keen interest in Nature Watching. Ian grew up in Southern chalk-stream country and from an early age he has, perhaps inevitably, been an incurable angler; Ian is especially interested in fly fishing for trout and salmon and lists standing up to his waist in a cold Scottish river as one of his favourite pass-times.....! Ian has an infectious enthusiasm for the British countryside and indeed everything outdoors; he has a wide range of outdoor skills, bushcraft and survival techniques.

Jim Prendeville - Red-Deer Survival Instructor

Jim spent many years teaching survival technique and strategies to the British Army and SF units in sometimes hostile environments all over the world; he has trained, worked with and alongside many of the well-known 'survival greats' and has built up an encyclopaedic knowledge of the practical application of survival techniques, wild foods, edible plants and wood-lore. Jim is widely acknowledged as an expert in Jungle, desert and mountain survival, he's quietly spoken and understated. Jim's extensive training and well documented ability to survive completely unassisted for mind-boggling periods of time have given Jim a quiet confidence which is extraordinarily infectious and enjoyable; Jim has 'the gift' of being able to enthuse and encourage people even in adverse conditions. As well as being immensely practical he is a highly qualified Para-Medic, a qualified mountain-climbing instructor and a qualified expert in wilderness First-Aid. Jim has co-authored several books on wild foods and is an expert on wild plants, mushrooms and fungus; Jim has been an enthusiast about the outdoors all of his life.

Deer Management Software

Red-Deer Outdoors Limited are very pleased to reccomend record-keeping products by CSVenator, the first products of their kind available to UK deer-stalkers, professional deer-managers, estates and deer-management groups.

Deer-Management in the UK is carried out in an environment which is increasingly covered by Government legislation and is also sensitive to potentially negative public perception; the maintenance of proper records offering an opportunity of objective reporting is likely to become an mportant necessity of deer management activities.

Simple and intuitive to use CSVenator recognise that when a stalker comes in from the field, food and rest are probably high on his or her agenda.....not computer record-keping! Therefore, CSVenator products are driven by drop-down lists to keep the amount of typing to an absolute minimum. The software does not display redundant information and will only prompt for input where it is required. For example, if you shoot a doe, the software won't display or ask for details about the size of the antlers!

CSVenator deer management products allow those involved in the control of deer populations for commercial, safety or sporting purposes to demonstrate a responsible and professional attitude to the control of deer by legal means.

CSVenator software is fully security protected; your CSVenator software will be provided with a unique un-locking key.
